Land grabbing

In collaboration with Professor Grandia, ProPetén produced a Q’eqchi’-language film in 2009 ("Li Qana'aj: Li B'e Re Xtawb'al li Qaxe”) based on her book Tz’aptz’ooqeb’ about land grabbing by palm plantations and cattle ranchers after a World Bank land administration project moved through the region. It was one of four films nominated at the XII Festival Icaro (the largest Central American film and television festival) for achievements in the category of “Food Security.” 38 minutes.

 

Traditional ecological knowledge

In collaboration with the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management in Toledo Belize, Professor Grandia produced a series of three documentary films in 2004 based on the “Wealth Trilogy [hyperlink back to the Reports and monographs page where this appears].

Elders demonstrated traditional skills described in the “Wealth Report.” [hyperlink the Wealth report]

    • Women elders:  pottery, weaving, food processing, and other crafts 
    • Male elders:  hunting, trapping, agricultural rituals, and other forest activities

 

Elders also told traditional stories from Q’eqchi’ oral history and their own watershed as translated into English in the “Stories of the Sarstoon Temash” [hyperlink the Stories]

She edited several hours of the original stories as told in Q’eqchi’ into three parts
